trompe l'oeil

Trompe L’oeil is a French term meaning ‘Trick of the Eye’ and describes a painting that deceives.

A good trompe l’oeil mural can blur the boundaries between real and fantasy. Sometimes making the viewer believe they are in a much larger or open area with the addition of a vista including a balcony or window, or other architectural feature/aperture.

Murals can also be fun - especially in children’s bedrooms and play areas where favourite characters can be portrayed.

Apparently, Rembrandt’s apprentices would paint coins on the floor of his studio because it was amusing watching him trying to pick them up!
